Under the Dome

Under the Dome - Stephen King I actually really liked this book way more than my final score probably indicates.

For the most part, I loved King's treatment of the characters and the steady progression of the plot. Much of this book felt very much akin to two of my favourite earlier King novels, The Stand and IT - both of which benefit from their substantial length to really draw you into their respective worlds - and I appreciated and enjoyed this fact right up until the finale.

Sadly, once the loose ends of the plot begin tying up, the book starts to feel very rushed and lacks the substance that the build-up deserves. I'm unsure whether this is down to over-enthusiastic editing, or simply a desire on the author's part to bring the novel to a close, but it left me feeling rather unsatisfied and, if I'm going to be completely honest, a bit cheated.

Not a bad book by any means (in fact, for the most part, I'd say it's one of the most enjoyable 'new' King books I've read thus far), but the conclusion left me cold.
